While I was reading The Source's 150th issue , filled with Hip Hop history lessons that I was so craving for, a colleague of mine (Paul the 'data miner' Gould) was again swift to send me a link to a visualization of Hip Hop artists by geographic location. It's pretty cool, take a look.
